Childhood Obesity: Is it Negligence?

June 29, 2009 by Administrator · Leave a Comment

I found this article very interesting. A mother has been arrested for child neglect for allowing her 14 year old son to become obese at 555 lbs.

There are other issues also that led to her arrest. Her son has a cancer that is very treatable, but has not allowed the doctors to treat him.

Although I find it sad that a mother would allow her child to become severly obese, I do not agree with the medical community or the government making the decision for the parents when it comes to medical treatments. Read this article from the Washington Post and give me your opinion below.

Sneaky Fitness For Kids

March 23, 2009 by Administrator · Leave a Comment

We had a very unusual warm day last week. I wanted to take advantage of the chance to get the kids outside and moving.

Exercise for kids should not be like ours. They need to have fun, move and play. This is how physical education is done at the Ramos house.

Get outside and play with your kids. Create some awesome memories. Read more

How to Become a Fit Parent

1. Put on that fitness-minded personality

Wether you desire a flat belly or just the time to workout, you have to start it all with your attitude. If you are determined to improve your fitness “no matter what,” the you will most likely be successful. Usually this takes the manifestation of anger with your appearance or lack of energy or poor health. Once you’ve made up your mind to be fit, then it’s time to don that “fit-minded personality.”
This is where you tell yourself multiple times daily that you have a tight mid-section, that you deserve a flat belly, if that’s your goal, for instance. Promise yourself that you’ll do something every day to work to that end. Your subconscious will listen to you. It doesn’t decipher between good and bad affirmations, it will simply apply what you always tell it. Are you saying or letting others say that you’re “fat” or “overweight” or “thick-waisted”? Time to change those words into “slender” or “sleek” or “tight”. Read more

Excuses Kill Dreams

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. day everyone.  My husband is off today so we are enjoying a half day of school.  My oldest attended her school co-op and my 6th grader is only working on a science project today.  We are almost halfway through our school year already and I don’t even know where it went.  Seems like each day passes faster and faster. Our Christmas Menu

December 13, 2008 by Administrator · 1 Comment

It’s Saturday and we are celebrating Christmas with the in-laws today. I am cooking up a Christmas feast for an early dinner and we’ll open some gifts. They are leaving on Monday so we had to have an early one for them. It should be fun.

Even though there are a few favorite items on the menu that are not quite on plan, I still make sure the majority of foods eaten are of a healthier nature. So I thought I would share today what is on our Christmas feast menu to give you a little idea of how to eat well while celebrating with picky family. Read more

Holiday Weight Gain

October 3, 2008 by Administrator · 2 Comments

With only 9 weeks left until Thanksgiving, many people become filled with dread as they think about those extra pounds they always put on during the holiday season.

I actually believe holiday weight gain begins now before the holiday season officially starts.

The weather is getting cooler. We are spending more time indoors.  Halloween candy is on sale.  We start using the oven more to create our fall comfort foods and we are less physically active.

Now is the time to take action.  Establish the daily habit of moving before the shorter, colder days set in.

It doesn’t take much to get the whole family out in the evening for a quick walk around the block.

It’s still cool enough to play a game of tag outside with the kids.

Just do one thing together a day.

It’s not hard.  It won’t kill you.  In fact, you’ll have a lot of fun!

Does That Match My Goals?

September 12, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment

Everyone knows how much a emphasize the importance of setting goals.  You must make them realistic and achievable.

Start with a big goal and break it down into smaller goals by working backwards.  I like to use this analogy.  Say, my goal is to organize my kitchen.  Well, that’s a pretty big goal!  I don’t want to hole myself up in the kitchen forever, so how can I accomplish this without spending an entire weekend on it?

First determine what needs to be done to accomplish this goal:
1.  Go through all the drawers and remove unused/unwanted items.
2.  Go through all the pots and pans and get rid of unused/damaged items.
3.  Go through the cabinets and get rid of unused/damaged items.
4.  Go through pantry and get rid of unapproved food items, damaged goods, expired goods, etc.

Next, take #1 and break it down even further:
1.  Pick one drawer and set a timer for 15 minutes.  Go through the drawer until it is done.  Pick another drawer tomorrow.

15 minutes is a much more manageable time frame and you know that by the end of the week, you will have tackled 7 drawers.  Some days you might do more than one depending on how much clutter is in them.

This is the same approach you need to take with goal setting.  Make your big goal and work backward with all the things you need to do to make this goal happen.

Let’s take this kitchen analogy a step further.  There are some things that you might do that will impede your progress.  Let’s say you are working on drawer number one and you see an item that belongs in the bathroom.  You procede to take that item to the bathroom and come back to the kitchen.  You see another item that belongs in your office so you trek to the office to put it back.  More time wasted!

I’m sure you can see where I am going with this.  We allowed ourselves to get sidetracked by these small items and have made the task of getting the drawer organized take a lot longer.

You should stop yourself and ask, “Is this activity I’m doing going to lead me closer to or further away from my goal?”

This applies to activities you are doing, foods you are eating, etc.

Make sure you are reading your goals twice a day:  When you wake and when you are going to sleep.  Keep them in the fore front of your mind.

Make sure everything you do is in tune with your goals.

What is Your Why

September 9, 2008 by Administrator · 1 Comment

I used to think that if I just weighed 120 lbs. I would be happy.  It’s more than that.  I was always trying to diet and get skinny for all the wrong reasons and for everyone but myself.  Once I had experienced my last pregnancy and was hurting with every step, I became determined to get rid of my fat so I could feel better again.  It was for me and me alone.  It definitely benefitted my immediate family members and my ability to serve God, but when I made it my own desire, my “why” for getting fit was much more important to me.

You must determine what being fit means to you and only you.  Not what your husband thinks, your mom thinks, your kids think or your best friend thinks.

Being fit is more than being a specific dress size or weight on the scale.  It’s about feeling vibrant and energetic and feeling comfortable in your own skin.  It’s about no longer comparing yourself to another woman again.

How much of life have you missed because you are unhappy with the way you look?

Do you somehow forget to tell your husband about the party you were invited to this weekend?

Do you avoid outdoor activities where you know “skinny” people will be?  Have you miserably sat on the sidelines while watching the kids have fun instead of jumping in?

Honestly determine why being fit is so important to you.  Write it down and put it where you can read it daily.  Add to it as you discover more reasons.  Believe me, this simple step is incredibly powerful.  Don’t think about this too long, just do it.

Go ahead - right now- what is your why?

Brainstorming Is A Must

August 28, 2008 by Administrator · Leave a Comment

On Monday, I took the girls to Indiana Beach for Homeschool Day.  It was great fun.  A couple of families from our homeschool group came also and it worked out wonderfully.  The four teenagers headed out on their own, my 10 year old hung with another family that had girls her age and since I was the only one with toddlers, I hit Kiddieland with my two in tow.

Although I didn’t get much adult time, I still had great fun watching my little ones enjoying themselves.  It gave me a lot of thinking time.  During these brainstorming sessions I come up with great ideas for my boot camps or our homeschool.  It’s important that I have a small notebook with me so I can jot all these great ideas down before I forget them.  There’s a lot of information floating around in this big ole head of mine and I wouldn’t want my ideas to get lost.

I am feeling so much better today from my neck injury.  I continue to ice it every hour.  My muscles are no longer locked up.  They are just really sore right now.  I’m hoping to get back on track within another week, although it will be at a much lower intensity than before.

Having hubby home has been wonderful.  He is off until Tuesday so we will get some awesome family time before he heads back to the office.

If you haven’t already, plan a time to get away and brainstorm.  You could just go for a walk.  Better yet, go for a jog or get in a workout. I seem to get amazing ideas while working out.  You’re body will thank you.

Create Your Safe Zone

August 1, 2008 by Administrator · 1 Comment

I’m feeling rather sad today.  I had to say goodbye to my brother for who knows how long.  His family left for Texas this morning at 5:30 am.  I will miss them dearly.  My brother and I are really close and it breaks my heart that we have to live so far apart from each other.

Since my company has left, it is now time to remove all food temptations from the house.  Whenever company visits, I end up making all the old filipino favorites that I grew up on: pancit, chicken adobo, lumpia, sinagang and many more foods that are not on plan.  Most people that visit also have food items that they eat regularly that I don’t such as boxed cereals, fruit juices and processed foods.  We even had a Sam’s Club size tub of ice cream enter our house.

Well, now that company has left, we will be eliminating those items and restocking on our family favorites such as fresh veggies and fruits, oatmeal, and eggs.  Eating off plan now and then is okay, but you’ve got to jump right back on track again.

Make sure your home is your safe zone.  Don’t use your children as excuses to leave the junk in the house because they don’t need it either.  I always allow them to order whatever treats they like when we eat out or are at potlucks, but at home they eat the healthy meals I create.

My kids love eating healthy and will always get excited when we start eating right again due to the way the processed foods make them feel.  Processed foods cause you to feel tired and sluggish all day, as well as, bloated and constipated.

Start healthy habits in your children now and it will follow them throughout their lifetimes.
